A poorly designed roundabout is to be changed to prevent road rage and accidents.

Markings and road signings on the A120 Marks Farm roundabout, the main route used by drivers from Halstead heading for Chelmsford, were only changed last October.

But drivers say the alterations have made it dangerous and caused traffic jams.

The Highways Agency plans to change the markings and signs again this autumn and reduce queues on the A131 on the approach to the roundabout.

The changes to the roundabout were funded by Tesco as a part of a section 106 agreement to extend the store.

It will also pay for the new changes.

A spokesman said: “The improvement achieved its main objectives in relieving congestion on the westbound A120 and providing additional capacity to the B1256 Coggeshall Road.

“However since opening there have been safety concerns about the new layout and significant new congestion on the A131 approach.

“The initial scheme will be implemented to modify driver behaviour on the roundabout which is leading to conflict and potential accidents.

“The exact scope of the improvement has yet to be agreed but it is anticipated that the scheme will cost between £10,000 and £30,000.”
