A DOCTORS’ surgery in Colchester has collected 400 signatures in support of a campaign launched in memory of Cassie McCord, 16.

Cassie was hit and killed by Colin Horsfall’s car after he drove on to the pavement in Head Street, Colchester. Three days earlier he had been advised by police to surrender his licence after a minor crash, but refused.

Cassie’s mum Jackie launched a campaign calling on the Government to give police powers to temporarily seize a licence where they felt the driver was unfit.

Staff at Creffield Medical Centre, in Cavalry Road, Colchester, have collected more than 400 signatures.

They will be added to more than 30,000 names already collected by Cassie’s family and friends and supported by people across the country.

Julie Tucker, a receptionist, said: “Everyone has been supportive of the campaign. They sign it without even being asked.

“No-one wants to give up their driving licence, but if you are not capable of driving you should not be behind the wheel.

“Police should have the authority to seize a licence.”

Jackie hopes to present the petition for Cassie’s Law to road safety minister Mike Penning.

Mr Horsfall, 87, died of his injuries two months after the crash. An inquest recorded he had unlawfully killed Cassie, who was a student at Colchester Sixth Form College.
