AN ENGLAND goalkeeping legend will unveil a new sports pavilion in a north Essex village - on his birthday.

Peter Shilton, the most capped England football player of all time, will officially open the new Alresford sports pavilion on September 18, his 63rd birthday.

Mr Shilton, who also holds the record for playing in the most Football League matches with 1,005 appearances, will cut the ribbon at the new pavilion at 11am.

Local firms Mark Brumpton Tree Services, Brett Aggregates and Alresford Garage are sponsoring the opening ceremony.

Work began recently on the £175,000 project to renovate the sports pavilion with new changing rooms, and install new toilets in the village hall, in Ford Lane.

The scheme is a joint venture between the parish council, Alresford Colne Rangers Football Club and the village hall.
