The founding family of cereal giant Kellogg’s have their roots in Braintree.
Brothers William Keith Kellogg and Dr John Harvey Kellogg founded Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flakes Company in 1906, which later became the worldwide brand we know today.
But his ancestors were Phillippe Kellogg, born in September 1560 in Bocking, who was father of Martin Kellogg, a weaver or cloth worker born in Great Leighs in November 1595.
Martin, who later lived in Hoppet Lane, Braintree, and had seven children, one of whom was Lieutenant Joseph Kellogg, born in Great Leighs and baptised in April 1626.
He became one of the early settlers of Farmington near Hartford in Connecticut and served in a military company set up to defend the settlers from the American Indians.
