A HOSPICE has challenged businesses to turn a £50 investment into a big money donation.
Colchester-based St Helena Hospice has teamed up with local solicitors to launch the Birkett Long £50 Challenge 2012.
The Apprentice-style scheme, sponsored by the Crouch Street solicitors, offers a crisp £50 note to 50 participating businesses.
They have to invest it in fundraising activities of their choice to get as much return for their money as possible.
Ideas could include raffles, barbeques, sporting challenges or talent contests.
David Cant, partner and director at Birkett Long, said: “We are delighted to support this innovative and engaging challenge to raise much-needed funds for St Helena Hospice.
“It will be fascinating to see how the 50 businesses approach this challenge; a challenge that wouldn’t be out of place on the Apprentice, with Lord Sugar cracking the whip.”
The company which returns the most money will be presented with an award at a special ceremony in October.
There will also be prizes for most innovative idea and outstanding team-work.
Jill Purcell, corporate and major donor manager at St Helena Hospice, said: “The Birkett Long £50 Challenge is such a positive thing for businesses to be involved in, as it hopefully lifts the gloom and doom of the recession.
“It also encourages fun, entrepreneurship and team-work with staff and customers.”
The scheme’s media partners are Heart 96.1 and the Colchester Circle magazine.
Heart Breakfast presenter Martin Day said: “St Helena Hospice is a wonderful organisation that helps people at the most difficult time.
“We’re delighted to be supporting this initiative and hope it raises thousands of pounds to help continue their great work.”
Businesses who would like to take part can call Jill Purcell on 01206 791740 or e-mail jpurcell@sthelenahospice.org.uk by Friday, June 1.
