A senior detective has urged motorists to stop leaving their laptops on show while popping into shops following a spate of smash-and-grab raids on cars.

Colchester police's Det Insp Stuart Smith made the plea after thieves stole expensive computer equipment from cars parked at Tollgate shopping complex.

He said: "People are gambling with hundreds of pounds of sometimes sensitive, personal or vital work-related information for the convenience of not taking a few moments to remove their belongings from view."
