I have seen the amount of rubbish that is dropped on to the streets of Colchester, so I agree showing a pile depicting this will bring it to people’s attention.

What I disagree with is sending out wardens during the day to pick on the few offenders who produce only a tiny fraction of this rubbish.

The vast majority of the rubbish which has to be cleared from our streets appears late at night – I have seen this as I walk to work each day at 5am.

There is a team of cleaners using machines and manually clearing up enormous amounts of discarded food wrappers and thousands of dog ends.

What I have seen during the day does not compare.

So I agree people should be asked to pick up their rubbish or further action taken if they refuse, but this should be done when the vast majority of offenders are littering, during the evening and at night.

Or would this not be as easy as picking on a few basically decent but thoughtless offenders that litter during the day.

If this is a “tough” new regime, send out these “tough” wardens when the worst offenders are out. Or would that be too scary?
