A faulty electrical cable caused a road to be closed off in Clacton town centre.
Intermittent firework-like explosions, puffs of smoke and flashes of blue light appeared from a section of Jackson Road being dug up, yesterday at 4pm.
Bemused workers and pedestrians crowded around to get a closer look at the explosions, which prompted Clacton firefighters to set up a cordon around the area.
Engineers from contractor Beach, which is carrying out the work in the town centre, were alerted to the fault.
Four vans of engineers from EDF Energy were at the scene into the evening.
