A call was made today for a 50mph maximum speed limit on country roads in Essex.
James Abbott, leader of the Green Party in Braintree, is asking for the current national 60mph limit to be slashed on all rural roads in the county.
He said he was outraged that Essex County Council and the police would not support his initiative.
Rodney Bass, county council portfolio holder for highways and transportation, said a blanket 50mph limit would be counter-productive.
