THE 1st Colchester Girls’ Brigade will disband next month after 74 years.

The Christian group, based at Colchester Baptist Church, in Eld Lane, will host a farewell weekend of events to mark the folding on March 25.

The number of members, girls aged between five and 18, has declined from about 100 to 33 in recent years.

Brigade captain Pam Simpson and fellow leader Carol Clubb have decided to retire.

With no one stepping forward to take on the role, the club will fold.

Mrs Simpson, 67, joined when she was six and said she would be sad to see the group disband. Highlights have included camping trips, taking part in displays at the Royal Albert Hall and girls gaining the Queen’s Award.

She said: “There are two or three other people who work with the girls, but there’s nobody who feels they can take on the responsibility. I’m going to miss it dreadfully.

“Over the years, the numbers have gone down and I think that’s because there are so many things for youngsters to do now.”

Mrs Simpson, who recently retired as an education welfare officer, and others at the church are setting up a smaller-scale club for girls and boys.

The final weekend will involve a party on the Friday, a reunion at the church on Saturday and a Sunday thanksgiving service.

Former members interested in attending the farewell party can contact Mrs Simpson on 01206 842304.
