THE father-in-law of a Colchester solder killed in Afghanistan hopes to boost his fundraising campaign by holding a collection at a supermarket.

Mike Jackson, from Lexden, has this year set himself the challenge to run, swim and cycle 1,000 miles to collect money for Help for Heroes.

The campaign is in memory of Colour Sergeant Kevin Fortuna, 36, killed by a roadside bomb in Helmand last May.

Mr Jackson, 62, launched his challenge on New Year’s Day at Kevin’s graveside at Colchester Cemetery and it will end there on January 1, 2013.

In the last month, Mr Jackson has completed 193 miles. He is racking up the miles on local roads and in the gym and pool at the town’s LA Fitness centre.

On Sunday, February 19, he will be riding an exercise bike outside Colchester Asda, at Turner Rise retail park, between 10am and 4pm. A book sale will also be held.
