THOUSANDS of runners are set to take to the streets of Colchester to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity.

Last year’s inaugural Colchester half marathon attracted 1,000 entries.

Building on last year’s success, the second event will be over a new course, with 2,500 runners able to take part.

It is hoped the March 11 race, organised by Colchester Colne Round Table and RunnersWord, will raise more than £200,000 through sponsorship of runners.

Course director Matt Eaton said: “The new route will allow us to add to the capacity of the race.

“It will also go through Colchester town centre, as well as through the countryside. We hope to have 2,500 runners and have a target of raising £25,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre from entry money.

“In addition, people who enter can raise money for whoever they want. “We think about £100,000 was raised last year. This year, we hope it will be £200,000.

Runners will start and finish at the Weston Homes Community Stadium. The course will take in the town centre Langham and Mile End.

Road closures will be place, but they will be rolling, so the roads are re-opened to traffic once the runners have passed through.

Organisers are setting up viewing points en route for families and friends to cheer on the runners.

Mr Eaton said 97 per cent of last year’s runners who gave feedback said they would be prepared to run again this year and many had praised how the event was marshalled.

He said: “The race is held in high esteem.

“It is timed specifically as a precursor for the London Marathon and the quality of the marshalling was praised.

“I hope we can have more volunteers as marshalls this year and build on that reputation.”
