Colchester Council has increased the annual cost of joining Lion Walk Activity Centre by £10, from £15 to £25 (Gazette, January 31). That’s very logical when the customers are retired people on a limited income (especially when the council has sent a letter, received today, saying it intends increasing the weekly housing rent by 8 per cent).

It’s OK, if you are retired and on benefits.

If you worked hard all your life and don’t get income-based benefits (because, like me, you get a small pension from working that takes you £4 a year or maybe more over the limit), then forget any activities or social life, because the increase in pensions won’t cover the forthcoming increases in everything else.

It is difficult to stay positive and cheerful nowadays.

This is just another way to close the facility because of “lack of members”.
