I read with interest the article, headlined: “Thousands of jobless lose their benefits” (Gazette, October 27).

It reported that thousands of people have been deemed fit for work, which sounds great. However, it leaves a few questions.

My wife has a long-term breathing disability after a car accident, in which she lost half her left lung. She had to give up her career as a GP, a job she loved.

She has an oxygen condenser, which she needs all night, and is often on oxygen 24/7. She has been hospitalised a number of times, is under the care of a specialist and her drugs list is extensive.

Some weeks ago, she received a form asking her about her medical condition, which she answered honestly and fully.

She supplied her drugs list, the names of her GP and specialist, who confirmed she suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and life-threatening asthma.

Last month, a letter arrived from some faceless person who had decided my wife is fit to work, and must attend a job-seeking workshop with a view to finding employment.

On the day the letter arrived, my wife was in the intensive care unit at Colchester General Hospital, and was in there for four days and nights.

It’s very clear that whoever decided she is fit to work has paid no attention to her replies at all, and has neglected to contact her GP, or specialist.
