NEW plans for a Colchester town square have been slammed by the visually impaired.

Partially-sighted Colchester residents argued the proposals outside the town’s new magistrates’ court would not be accessible for them as they would lack physical “signposts” such as kerbs.

Instead, they are calling for the proposals to be recalled and changed.

Phil Lee, who is partially sighted, said: “At the moment it’s horrendous. You really do have to concentrate when crossing the road there.

“Guide dogs rely on using a proper kerb. That’s what they stop at. If the council smoothes over the surfaces it’s going to be even more dangerous. The plans need to be looked at again.”

Colchester Council submitted the application to create the pedestrianised area off St Botolph’s roundabout last month.

New paving, lighting and artwork will all be put in, if approved.

A Colchester Council spokesman said: “Colchester Council is working to deliver an attractive, safe new gateway into the town centre.

“The area will be pedestrianised and a scheme that facilitates pedestrian priority will be employed in the area, which has proved a safe, successful method when used on other recent projects in the town.

“This new square promises to provide a new piece of public realm, that everyone will be able to enjoy.”
