CHART-TOPPER Matt Cardle performed an intimate gig for some of his younger fans when he made a surprise visit to his former school.

The X Factor winner took time out from working on his debut album to return to Stoke College in Stoke by Clare, near Sudbury, yesterday.

Matt, 28, is currently working in a London studio on his first album, due out in November.

He said: “Being in the studio is where I’ve wanted to be for years and years. I have been working with lots of different people.”

Matt said if his record is not a success, he would not be signing on to reality TV shows to remain in the public eye, unlike some X Factor graduates.

He said: “I am a musician, and if I’m not doing music I wouldn’t be here.”

He also revealed despite living away from home, he does still pop back to Little Maplestead as often as he can.

He said: “I love being back here, I come back for a day or two when I can.

After helping to judge the school’s own mini-X Factor competition, the Little Maplestead sensation wowed children and staff alike with an outdoor acoustic performance.

Music teacher Adrian Marple said: “He makes us all very proud and is a good role model for the pupils because he conducts himself so well.”

Youngsters at the school, which caters for children aged from three to 16, were not aware of their surprise visitor until he walked up the steps to the top of the music block.

Pupil Cameron Scorer, 14, played the piano and sang in front of the star. Matt praised the teenager for the tone of his voice.

Mir Watts, 12, who also performed, said Matt’s musical success has had a lasting impact on the school.

After hearing the pupils sing, Matt returned the favour with performances of Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ and the Moody Blues hit ‘Nights in White Satin’.
