I am writing regarding the article (Gazette, June 6), headlined: “Football for victory”.

It involved a recreation of a football match in the film Escape to Victory at the Colchester United stadium.

I am sure it was good entertainment for those present, but I find the display of the Nazi swastika in this country appalling, let alone in Colchester, a garrison town where, during the war, young men marched off to their death to eradicate this disgusting and infamous insignia.

The jackbooted German uniforms strutting around were bad enough, to say nothing of the president of the Royal British Legion branch surrounded by German troops with SS on their collars and him with “shoulder to shoulder with all who serve” emblazoned on the front of his T-shirt.

I know we cannot go on bearing a grudge against a country that brought so much carnage across the world, but it’s another thing to glorify the Nazis.
