I am writing in response to the article (Gazette, June 13), headlined: “Attack dogs’ bite is stripping our bark”.

It makes me so sad to see articles that continue to suggest certain dog breeds are naturally aggressive.

As an owner of an American Bulldog, it saddens me that people are becoming so cautious of bull breeds, as so many of these dogs have such loving temperaments.

While some may not be so, a responsible owner will take steps to minimise potential difficulties and/or work with the dog to overcome such issues.

If owners have been in Castle Park encouraging their dogs to attack and to bite, it is not the dogs at fault – it is the ignorance, or stupidity, of their owners.

The use of phrases such as “attack dogs” and “vicious breeds” in this article serves only to increase a stereotypical perception of these dogs, when it is the owners we should be criticising.

As I write this, my so-called “vicious” dog is curled up on my son’s lap with her head resting on his chest, snoring loudly.

Maybe this would make a good reader picture to print, to serve as a reminder of the wonderful character of such dogs.
