IT really will be the end of an era when recently-formed Colchester band Out of Nowhere take to the Victoria Inn’s stage this weekend.
That’s because it will be frontman Steven Allenby’s last gig in Colchester before he and his wife move to the Outer Hebridies next month.
Since taking over the running of Vagabonds, in St John’s Street, more than ten years ago, Steve has been at the forefront of the music scene As well as playing live with his various groups, but also promoting a number of acts.
Most notably, he was the man behind Colchester group Fuzzface, selling out the Colchester Arts Centre on a few occasions, an achievement achieved by few bands nationally or locally renowned.
Most recently, he formed five-piece indie band Out of Nowhere with Fuzzface drummer Mark Turnbull, who along with Ian Fulcher, Tom Hardy and Rafal Waleaki, quickly established themselves on the Colchester live music circuit, culminating in a appearance at the Wivenhoe May Fair last month and the Bull last weekend. His wife, Jenny, will also be sorely missed.
Well known for her Mersea-inspired children’s books, she is also a member of Lady Bird and the Larks.
Steven says: “I have been to and played at a lot of gigs in the past 11 years in Colchester, but these last few gigs do feel a little special.
“The other night, I bumped into Matt Selley from the band Hyde, who were one of the first bands to play at Vagabonds.
“He said he would love to kick off the nights for us. For me, that topped the whole thing off.”
The group play the North Station Road venue this Saturday from 8pm.
