A POSTWOMAN has had the tip of two of her fingers bitten off by a dog while on her rounds.

Police have confirmed a postwoman was bitten in Marsh Crescent, Rowhedge, but no further action is being taken because it was on private land.

The incident was revealed as Communication Workers Union health and safety officer Dave Joyce spoke out about the seriousness of dangerous dog attacks.

He is urging people to support the union’s national campaign – Bite Back – to force a change in the law to protect postal workers and owners.

The union believes the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 is not being used effectively and is increasingly outdated.

The woman was bitten just before 10am on November 16, but details have only just been released A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail takes very seriously the safety of its employees, particularly our frontline postmen and women who deliver the mail.

“Unfortunately, dog attacks are a hazard faced by our employees.

“Our main aim is to prevent attacks and we look for the co-operation of our customers to take responsibility for keeping their pets under control.”
