A ROW has erupted over the backing of an alleged illegal traveller site in Stanway.

Furious MP Priti Patel has criticised the decision by Colchester Council to allow extra caravans on the encampment, in Turkey Cock Lane.

Council officers decided to allow more caravans on the site for the sick relatives of families already based on the site and for other carers.

But Ms Patel criticised the council for ignoring the proper planning process and for treating travellers favourably in comparison to the settled community.

She said: “I am appalled by the lack of action by Colchester Council in dealing with this problem.

“If a resident had erected a new building or extension without planning permission the council would take enforcement action, but it is turning a blind eye to this planning breach by travellers.

“Instead of taking robust action now and defending the rights of local residents, the council is only encouraging further planning breaches.”

Planning service manager Vincent Pearce defended the decision, in a letter to Ms Patel, pointing to an attempt “to achieve the appropriate balance between safeguarding everyone’s human rights within the confines of the planning system”. However, Ms Patel responded: “The council is hiding behind human rights to override the planning process.”

Permission has been given for two mobile homes and four touring caravans on a permanent basis at the site.

The council is also giving those on the site until next year to sort out care issues before asking them to apply for temporary permission to remain.
