Two crews from Braintree, and another two from Halstead, were sent, at 6.52pm on Tuesday October 26, to tackle the blaze in the town centre.
A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said the building, which measures about 10m by 30m, is believed to be derelict.
Crews, using breathing appparatus and three hose reels, were continuing to tackle the fire at 8pm.
