YOUNGSTERS across north Essex are being warned not to use Halloween as an excuse for antisocial behaviour.
Shopkeepers in Colchester and Tendring are also being urged not to sell eggs and flour to young people in the run-up to Halloween.
Insp Chris Barker, of Essex Police, said Halloween should be an opportunity for youngsters to have fun, but not at other people’s expense.
He said officers would be firm with those who target elderly and vulnerable people on what was one of the force’s busiest nights of the year.
“Halloween can be a fun night for all and we just want to ensure it’s safe for everyone,” said Insp Barker.
Officers will be speaking to schoolchildren, to tell them some people may be frightened and intimidated by what youngsters perceive to be fun. They are also being warned not to talk to strangers or go trick-or-treating without an adult.
Residents who do not want to be bothered by trick-or-treaters can download this poster from Essex Police at www.2smart.co.uk/halloween and display it.
