Job Title: Sub-Editor
Department: Editorial
 Responsible to: Chief Sub-Editor


Main Objectives :

* To lay out and sub-edit news and feature pages for the six paid-for weeklies and two free titles, conforming to the papers' style and quality requirements and to agreed deadlines.
* To lay out and sub pages for associated weekly newspapers and other publications, as required.
* To upload subbed news items to the company's websites.
* To upload items for the company's websites as required

Job Requirements :

 * To complete a minimum of six tabloid pages a day, aiming for an average of eight.
* To check, rewrite and cut reporters' copy to meet legal and style criteria.
* To write appropriate and appealing headlines and captions.
* To select and crop pictures.
* To maintain a sound knowledge of the company's print and online products and the communities they serve.
* To check and sign off colleagues' pages as required.
* To liaise with senior members of the production team, news editors and other editorial colleagues as required.
* To have a professional and flexible approach to work.
* The jobholder will carry out other duties as required.
* The position is based in Colchester but the jobholder may be required to work at other Newsquest Essex offices.
* To be available to work variable shifts as required within a 75-hour fortnight to include evenings and weekends.
