THIS year’s Colchester Oyster Feast will have a distinctly military flavour.
Among the guests of honour at next Friday’s event will be Mary Champion, mayor of Wootton Bassett, the Wiltshire town through which Britain’s returning war dead are ceremonially driven.
Speakers will include outspoken Daily Telegraph columnist Robin Page, restaurateur Mark Baumann and Colchester stage magician Michael J Fitch.
Mayor Sonia Lewis said: “I’m proud and honoured to be part of this year’s celebrations. Colchester is a garrison town and the feast is an opportunity to pledge our support to our troops in Afghanistan.”
The theme for the 165th annual feast will be the community and its many volunteers.
Colchester Council says the Oyster Feast largely pays for itself. In 2008, revellers drank £2,676 of booze and tucked in to £575 of oysters. Councillors have to pay £90 to attend. About 30 seats are reserved for the public, who are picked in a ballot. They, too, must pay. Diners will be entertained this year by the Colne Valley Youth Orchestra.
