Jamie's He-Man cartoon figures coup
AN artist is hoping to manipulate the collectables economy – by the power of Greyskull.
Jamie Moakes, 26, of London Road, Colchester, is on a one-man mission to collect every Ram-Man plastic figurine from Eighties cartoon series He-Man.
His You Will Be Rare art project, which began just over a year ago, has reached its 100th figure.
He says: “He-Man figures were far too expensive, but you could pick up a Ram-Man quite easily for just £2.”
Jamie’s project works on the principle that his buying activity will make the market for the figures more buoyant.
He believes the more the figures appear sought after, the more likely it is their value will rise. In addition, the more figures Jamie owns, the rarer they will become.
He adds: “I’ve probably spent about £700 up to now, with the cheapest at 20p and the most expensive costing £54, which was still in the packaging and in mint condition. I got most of them from the internet, but I did get three at Ardleigh boot sale. That was a good day.”
Jamie grew up in Frinton and attended Tendring Technology College and Colchester Institute, where he did a foundation art course.
Since graduating from Kingston University, where he did a degree in fine art, Jamie has started a number of performance art projects.
You Will Be Rare will eventually become a show to be performed at the Colchester Arts Centre in January.
It will be a comedic presentation, where Jamie will take the audience through his mission.
He is determined the project will continue until he has all the figures.
Jamie adds: “I found out the company made just 100,000, but I’ve no idea how many are still out there.”
