THE organiser of this year’s cancelled Colchester Carnival has produced a magazine to push the unofficial event.

Ian Goldsworthy is set to lead a procession through the town on Saturday at 2pm – although it could be a one-man procession.

The official event was cancelled after permission for road closures was refused.

Mr Goldsworthy criticises Essex Police, Essex County Council and Colchester Council in the brochure.

He writes: “Colchester loves a carnival, so I ask why the 2010 Carnival has not had the support it deserves from the three agencies?”

Pam Boon, who organised the carnival court last year and for this year’s non-event, said she was disappointed pictures of last year’s carnival court had been used in the magazine.

She said: “It makes it look like we support this event on Saturday and we don’t.”

Barbara Pears, of theatre group CO2, said she had not known an article about the group’s Footloose production would be in the magazine but was pleased for the publicity.

Martin Hunt, borough councillor responsible for street services, said: “There wasn’t a carnival this year because forms were not filled in properly.

“Last year’s successful carnival would not have gone ahead either if it were not for the authorities doing things that needed to be done.”
