In reply to Val Aiken (Letters, September 24), I walk to the Triangle shops daily, so am pretty well up with the level of service there.

As in all things, there are good and bad, and the girl who was so rude to my husband did not go the extra mile.

I think the moral is quite simple. To survive, small traders must not rest on their laurels. Service has to be consistently good, as customers vote with their feet.

I worked in retail for a number of years myself, so do know what I am talking about – and I do agree a smile can really lift someone’s spirits and is free.
