One of my favourite sports of late has been to scour the pages of the Gazette for articles containing the word “champion” and Kevin Bentley.

The man is seemingly multi-talented and he is certainly perceived to be champion of this and champion of that – in a nutshell, a good all-round champion.

Readers will have noticed Kevin recently ingeniously described himself as the Cycling Champion of Essex – and (surely it was a coincidence) just as the Tour of Britain pedalled through town.

He is also, of course, champion of the Conservatives on Colchester Council.

And I am sure I am not alone in remembering he has long been represented as an Olympic champion – not, of course, as a finelyhoned gold medal-winning athlete, but as a champion of Colchester, trying to champion Colchester’s bid to attract athletes competing at the London games in 2012.

Oh yes and, of course, we must not forget Firstsite.

Truly his efforts there have been a world class performance.

He has always been a champion of the Golden Blunder.
