THIS is one marriage where the wheels keep turning.

A happy couple who found love at a rollerskating rink are celebrating their diamond wedding at Colchester’s Rollerworld.

Ron and Terri Cornell, of Parkside Quarter, Colchester, have shared a lifelong love of rollerskating since meeting on the rink in 1948.

Terri, 79, was working as a skating instructor at Butlin’s, in Skegness, when Ron literally rolled into her life.

He was at the holiday park enjoying a break with friends and the sparks flew between the pair instantly.

Ron returned home to London after his holiday, and Terri eventually returned to the capital when the holiday season was over.

However, destiny struck when they bumped into each other while skating at a rink in Forest Gate, East London.

The couple, who now have three great-grandchildren, were married at East Ham register office in 1950, but moved out of London when their beloved skating rink closed down.

Mrs Cornell said: “It was after the war when no-one had any money, and there were no nightclubs back then.

“People would either go to the cinema or go rollerskating, and thankfully this was something we both loved doing.

“So you can imagine how disappointed we were when the rink closed down.

“We decided to move out to Bury St Edmunds so we could go to the skating rink nearby.

“It was lovely to have a shared interest, it also helped to keep us fit and youthful.” The couple eventually moved to Colchester so they could be near the rink which is now Rollerworld.

Rollerworld is aptly where they also celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2000, when they convinced a vicar to wear skates and renew their vows on the rink.

Although 84-year-old Ron had to give up skating five years ago, Terri runs a skating class at the rink every Sunday.

The couple hired the rink yesterday evening, to celebrate 60 years of marriage with family and friends.
