ARSONISTS have struck a Clacton business for the second time in six weeks.

The firebugs set the rubbish bin alight at the rear of Subway, in Station Road. The blaze then spread to the plastic cladding on the building.

A member of staff found the bin alight on arrival at work. Firefighters were called to the scene at 5.52am.

The fire was extinguished almost immediately. However, the heat from the fire had destroyed the bin and caused extensive scorching to a nearby wall and a second bin.

Store manager Ken Taylor said this was the second time the shop had been targeted in six weeks.

He said: “Last time, it was just the bin, luckily, and no other damage, although we heard cars and other things in the area were also set alight on the same night.

“I was concerned for the building and the staff. Fortunately, there was no fire damage to the building.”

Station Officer Martin Avent, of Colchester and Tendring Community Command, said: “Deliberate fires like these can risk lives, damage property and tie up precious fire service resources. The local community can work with us to help make sure these fires stop.

“Anyone who sees anything suspicious can call us or the police. If you would like the call to remain confidential then contact us through Firewatch.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, and anyone with information should contact PC Nicola Heath at Clacton police station on 0300 3334444, or Firewatch on 01206 562643.
