EXPECTANT mothers can learn more about their options from a DVD filmed at Colchester General Hospital.

Barry Whitlow, a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at the hospital, came up with the idea for the film because he was worried how little mums-to-be seemed to know about births in which doctors have to help the baby into the world.

He approached Health Enterprise East, a scheme which encourages NHS staff suggestions for better care, and as a result Childbirth & You – Understanding Interventional Childbirth is now available.

Mr Whitlow said: “It causes anxiety and concern for women and their partners when obstetricians have to intervene.

“This is an area where there is a need for more factual information – there is plenty of material readily available about more straightforward deliveries.

“I don’t want parents-to-be and their families to rely on anecdotes, so I came up with an idea of an informative DVD which would give good, factual information in plain English, rather than medical jargon.”

The 45-minute film covers topics, including Caesarean sections, forceps deliveries and pain relief, as well as natural birth.

Footage shot in the maternity unit at Colchester General Hospital has been edited together with animated sequences and interviews with mothers, midwives and Mr Whitlow himself Tracy Coultas, innovation manager for Health Enterprise East, said: “This DVD has been designed to cover the key areas of potential concern for mums-to-be.

“The style is friendly and informative and can be watched comfortably with partners, birthing companions and family.”

The DVD is available from many retailers, including amazon.co.uk and play.com
