It was very encouraging to read the two-page report headlined: “We Want a Post Bank” (Gazette, August 3).

Apparently, the Essex Federation of Small Businesses has launched a campaign to create a new type of bank to give a boost to local communities, and wants to make use of the Post Office network.

The post bank would be a high street bank we could trust!

May I suggest the name of the new bank should be “Deja vu”?

Royal Mail created a bank in the Eighties. It was named Girobank.

Due to the lack of support (perhaps from small businesses) Alliance & Leicester took over Girobank.

Of course, Alliance & Leicester has now been taken over by Santander – so much for keeping trade local.

I look forward to seeing the new French bank Deja vu doing business from the post office.

If it uses the same postcode of GIR OAA, we may see Girobank return to post office banking.
