THE First phase of Colchester’s over-budget, behind-schedule arts complex has been completed.

Funders used the occasion to insist the building is now referred to as Firstsite, after the organisation that will run the gallery, and not its better-known name the Vaf.

Checks, including an air tightness test, have all been passed.

Work to fit the interior of the much-delayed project is due to begin in a fortnight, with an opening date planned for next summer.

Wayne Warner, commercial director of Firstsite, said: “It’s a significant step towards the completion of this landmark building for Colchester.

“We’re confident the spectacular new venue will drive the economic regeneration of our town.”

Paul Smith, Colchester councillor responsible for Firstsite, revealed contractors Mace had completed the shell of the building on time and slightly under budget.

He said: “When it opens, this building will provide a range of facilities, including a restaurant, auditorium, learning spaces and exhibitions for residents, businesses and visitors to Colchester.”

The overall price tag of Firstsite, which initially had funding totalling £16.5million, could reach £28.6million. Funders the Arts Council and Essex County Council have both agreed to fork out an extra £1.5million each to complete the interior.

They could get some or all of that funding back if a series of legal actions against contractors charged with building firstside, originally due to open in 2008, are successful.

Colchester Council has already won a legal action against now defunct former builders Banner Holdings, and expects to receive a £1.4million bond held by a third party, which will contribute towards lowering the building’s final bill.

Helen Lax, Arts Council regional director, said the gallery will boost the local economy, while Peter Martin, Essex County Council leader, added: “I am delighted we are one step closer to the opening of this facility.”
