Bob Dove raises concerns over the use of the publically- raised £250,000 for the Roman circus site (Letters, July 14).

As I understand it, the intention is to have roughly one quarter of the building made available to the public and, given the costs to purchase and renovate the Sergeants Mess will probably not leave much change out of £1million, it doesn’t surprise me that other parties would be required to make the scheme viable.

I am grateful to the efforts of the fundraising volunteers and Colchester’s Archaeological Trust for striving to secure the garden with the starting gates.

I’m sure some would like to see a more ambitious plan and others are indifferent altogether.

Who knows what might happen in future generations, but this is a great start and all those involved should be congratulated.

I look forward to enjoying a coffee while sitting within the site of the Silverstone of its day.
