A replacement bus service was put on between Braintree and Witham railway stations for more than four hours after train delays.
Stranded commuters at stations on the Braintree branch line boarded buses from 9.15am following disruptions at Chelmsford, which started at 5am yesterday. The disruptions were caused by signal failures and commuters at Witham also faced delays of up to 90 minutes.
A spokesman for train operator One said: "We worked as quickly as we could to minimise any disruptions. The main line was back to normal running by 8.50am, although there were ongoing delays."
