Vandals on a bridge pelted motorists with rocks.
Fast-moving cars were hit by stones as they drove along one of Colchester's busiest roads.
The attacks were reported to police in the build-up to rush-hour in Balkerne Hill at about 4.10pm on Wednesday. Police have pledged to increase patrols and come down hard on any offenders.
