COPS hope a drunken football fan who stripped to his undies could be the key to avoiding trouble after England play Germany.

Police are preparing for the worst if Fabio Capello’s men get knocked out of the World Cup on Sunday.

Eight years ago, thousands of people caused disorder when they marched en masse through Colchester after England’s exit.

In the 2006 World Cup campaign, officers in Clacton feared for their safety after England’s defeat against Portugal prompted scuffles and criminal damage.

But police were saved – thanks to a pair of Union flag pants.

Insp Paul Butcher, from the Colchester Town Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “A lot of people came out of the pubs and ended up in Magic City arcades.

“There were a few scuffles and people started to damage things. We were worried about the situation – worried enough that we had called for support from Colchester.

“All of a sudden this man got on top of Tubby Isaacs’ cockles stall, stripped down to his Union flag underpants and started dancing. It changed the mood completely, and a few people started to laugh.

“Then a girl got up beside him and stripped to her bra and pants, and everyone was laughing and cheering. Their actions, particularly those of the man, defused the situation completely and everyone just went home without any more incidents.

“If this guy – or any other street entertainers – fancy making an appearance again this year, then it will be gratefully received.”

Extra officers will be on the streets to try to ensure the afternoon and evening pass as smoothly as possible. Mr Butcher added: “The weather, a 3pm kick-off, the fact it’s a Sunday, and against Germany, all lead to a potential for trouble.

“We want to remind people to make sure they eat before they drink, not to start too early and to be responsible with alcohol.

“It will be a great atmosphere. If we win, it will be fantastic. We want people to enjoy themselves, just not at the expense of others.”
