TWO CCTV cameras are set to be installed in Jaywick.

Police hope the cameras, on land near Brooklands Gardens, will make the resort safer.

Jaywick has high crime levels, particularly of violence and criminal damage, and accounts for more than one in ten burglaries in Tendring. Police hope they can cut the figures by keeping a closer eye on the area’s alleyways.

An application submitted to Tendring Council describes the Brooklands estate as “extremely permeable, allowing for easy access by criminals while they remain virtually unseen”.

It continues: “There is a clear relationship between crime and the corridor of the alleyways, mainly because they are poorly lit, offer an avenue of escape, and cannot be seen by passing police patrols.”

Insp Jason Scrivener, of Essex Police, said: “From our point of view, the cameras are an excellent bit of kit.

“They will give us another way to deal with incidents as they arise and will also help us police the dispersal order, which is currently in effect in the area.

“They are a good deterrent and are a long-term solution to combat antisocial behaviour, violent crime and burglary.”

He said police would look to install the cameras as soon as possible, if permission was granted.

Peter Martin, the leader of Essex County Council, said: “CCTV cameras were proposed as the result of consultation with residents in Jaywick.

“The area’s poorly-lit alleyways offer an easy escape for perpetrators of criminal damage and burglary.

“We believe the two cameras will act as a deterrent, assist the police to monitor any situations which do arise and provide some much-needed reassurance to the local community.”

If approved, the cameras will be jointly funded by Tendring Council and the crime and disorder reduction partnership.
