A CHARITY helping rape and sexual abuse victims has received £218,774 of lottery funding.

The Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse, based in Colchester, was one of three Essex charities to share £971,998 under the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities programme.

The grant will pay for a qualified counsellor for five years to support women, set up a new group to help victims’ carers and partners, and train other organisations.

Manager Lindsey Read said: “We are a small charity with very limited funding.

“This will make an enormous difference to the organisation, staff and clients.

“The demand for our services far outstrips what we can provide, as we don’t have enough resources to do what’s needed.”

The centre was set up 21 years ago as Colchester Rape Crisis Line and changed its name in 2008.

It helps hundreds of victims of sexual abuse each year from north east and mid Essex.
