FRIENDS and relatives of a teenager who died in a car accident have made donation to a firefighters’ charity, as a mark of gratitude to the crew which cut him from the wrecked car.

Michael Hammond lost his life aged 18 when his friend’s car hit a tree on the Avenue of Remembrance, Colchester, last November.

Michael had played for Wivenhoe Youth FC as a boy and his mother Jan Lawson teamed up with her son’s old coach, Stuart Yearling, to arrange a fundraising football match in his honour.

As a result, £305 was presented to Colchester fire station’s Blue Watch, to be passed to the Fire Fighters Charity.

Ms Lawson, of Spring Chase, Wivenhoe, said: We had a great night at the match and were really pleased, as some members of the fire brigade were able to be there as well. I’m happy we were able to do something for them.”

* After the crash, Mitchell Welham, 21, of Rotary Way, Colchester, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is still on bail.
