A CYCLE path that was recently widened might have to be moved because it is too close to homes.

Janet Swann, who suffers from cerebral palsy, says she feels unsafe because of the speed cyclists travel along the path outside the front of her house, in Pickford Walk, Greenstead.

Cycle Colchester has admitted the path might need to be widened or moved further away from homes.

Ms Swann said: “It can be quite frightening because I can’t always hear the bikes, but they come up so quickly right past my house.

“It is an accident waiting to happen on my doorstep and I worry about my grandchildren, too, when they come round.”

Julie Young, who is standing to keep her seat as councillor for St Andrew’s ward, says a number of residents had voiced concerns about the paths.

She said: “I think we need to look at these cycle paths and how they impact on people nearby.

“People think cycle paths are all going to be positive, but they do have an impact on pedestrians and residents as well.”

Cycle Colchester, a partnership that includes Essex County Council, Colchester Council and local cycling groups, funded the path improvement scheme.

Programme manager Mark Eves said: “An important part of our work is to promote safe and responsible cycling. We would be happy to meet to discuss the issues raised.”
