A lifelong Harwich man has fulfilled his ambition to become the town's mayor.
John Thurlow was appointed in the role yesterday at the traditional mayor-making ceremony.
A special service was held at St Nicholas's Church before Mr Thurlow threw kitchels to dozens of excited children from the balcony of the Guildhall.
The sweet buns, which are unique to Harwich, have been thrown by the new mayor each year for more than 400 years.
