An alcoholic caused havoc in a court room - because the judge didn't turn up to his wedding.

Ian Watson was upset with District Judge David Cooper after sending him an invite to his April wedding - when he had planned to give him a bottle of whisky.

When Watson became disruptive in the dock at Colchester Court, Judge Cooper left the room and ordered he be taken to the cells.

The 40-year-old caused further havoc yesterday when he refused to go with the prison guards.

He yelled: "I've tried to give him a bottle of whisky but he won't accept it," before swearing at various members of court staff.

He had already been thrown out of the court room for burping in the public gallery and shouting at the judge.

Solicitor Trevor Linn explained: "He invited you to his wedding on April 6 and he was upset that you didn't go. He was hoping to have a drink with you.

"He had a bottle of 12-year-old malt Glenfiddich whisky he wanted you to have."

Watson eventually came back into the dock and, after some debate with Mr Linn over his plea, admitted being drunk and disorderly on May 5.

The court heard he argued with his neighbours in Seaview Avenue, Little Oakley, and swore at police who went to help.

Judge Cooper ordered he pay a £100 or serve a day in custody.

"As it so happens, you've served a day in custody because I sent you down earlier anyway so there you go, I did you a favour."
