A Lithuanian has been stopped allegedly trying to bring guns into Essex.
Customs officers found two disassembled machine pistols hidden inside an exhaust system in the back of a van driven by Sarunas Gustaitus, a court heard.
The exhaust system was found among boxes of bread, which the 33-year-old claims he was delivering.
Colchester Court heard Gustaitus was stopped as he tried to pass through Harwich International Port on Friday.
The officers found the guns and silencers when they dismantled the exhaust system.
Gustaitus has denied all knowledge of the weapons.
Magistrates refused an application for bail and remanded him in custody until he can be dealt with at Chelmsford Crown Court.
