Health services in Tendring will be slashed after an unpopular decision to merge primary care trusts (PCTs) in Essex, an MP has warned.

The Government yesterday announced Tendring PCT and Colchester PCT will form the new North East Essex PCT.

Tendring councillors fear the merger means the district will lose out on £9 million of funding which would have been spent on vital health services for its residents.

Harwich MP Douglas Carswell has predicted health services on the coast will be starved of funding at the hands of Colchester.

Paul Unsworth, chief executive of Tendring PCT, said the merger made sense but he would have preferred to see Tendring remain as a stand-alone Trust.

Brendan Osborne, chief executive of Colchester PCT, said the merger allowed it to continue to work with its colleagues in Tendring.
