Colchester's new mayor Richard Gower was formally appointed at a ceremony in the town's Moot Hall today.
Mr Gower, who represents Marks Tey, will be accompanied by his wife Jacqueline, mayoress. He took over from outgoing mayor Terry Sutton (Lib Dem, Berechurch).
Mr Gower said he was looking forward to the year with nervous anticipation.
He said: "It is a great honour and something I never really expected ever to be."
