A lorry and two cars were involved in the accident during sleet and snow at about 6.40am on the Coggeshall bypass. A man in his 40s had to be cut free from a red Ford Escort car. He was taken to Colchester General Hospital with serious multiple injuries.
A second man in a blue Ford Focus car was taken to hospital with a minor head injury. The lorry driver and several passers-by were treated for shock at the scene.
The road was closed in both directions for several hours, throughout the morning rush hour, while emergency crews dealt with the accident, which caused long tailbacks with traffic being diverted through Coggeshall.
