A portion of chips thrown out of a car window became a tale of two districts.

Litter lout Mathew Buer was travelling along the A133 between Clacton and Colchester when he was spotted throwing the chips by a council employee at several points. Mr Buer was fined £50 for littering from Colchester Council and he paid up.

But then he got a second demand from neighbouring Tendring District Council as some of the chips fell in its district. The council will take Mr Buer to court if he does not pay the fine.

Mr Buer, 21, of St Osyth Road, Clacton, said: "Yesterday, I got a letter from Tendring Council saying that part of what I threw out of the window landed in its district and the rest in Colchester and I had to pay two fines ," he added.

"They've got to be taking the mickey, big time."

Mike Page, a spokesman for Tendring Council, said the circumstances may seem a bit unusual but the offender only had himself to blame.
