Police chiefs have vowed to show zero-tolerance in a bid to slash the number of deaths and horrific injuries on Essex roads.

They have pledged to cut the spiralling carnage which has already claimed 16 lives this year.

The news came just hours after the Gazette revealed the death rate on the county's roads is up 100 per cent on last year's figures.

Assistant chief constable John Broughton said: "By targeting drink-driving, speed, driver behaviour, seatbelts and fatigue, we will work towards reducing the incidents of killed and serious injury crashes by 20 per cent by the end of 2007."

The emergency services are teaming up with the county council and Highways Agency to launch a multi-agency task force to cut road deaths.

A spokesman said: "In total 1,075 people were killed or seriously injured on roads in Essex in 2004.
